This conversation accompanied by a screening of excerpts from Reanimation will address how video and performance art pioneer Joan Jonas develops new work often departing from literary references and working together with various artists. Jonas will give an insight into how she creates the different stages and formats that form a body of work, focusing on her most recent project Reanimation, for which jazz pianist, Jason Moran composed the music. 

This performance piece was initially developed at MIT, Cambridge, USA where Jonas is a Professor for Performance. Departing from Under the glacier, a novel by the Nobel-prize winning Icelandic writer Halldór Laxness, the two artists carried out an improvisation through music, sound, movement, and video, working with ideas of collage and animation, that lead to Reanimation, a further exploration of this subject.

Reanimation in its most recent iteration was presented at documenta 13 in Kassel in 2012.  This lecture is part of Joan Jonas's Leverhulme Trust Visiting Professorship at the School of Fine Art, Royal College of Art.

Jonas is an internationally acclaimed video art and performance pioneer. Jonas’s work has been widely exhibited internationally most recently at CCA Kitakyushu Project Gallery, Japan; documenta 13, Kassel; Museum of Modern Art, New York; MACBA, Barcelona; the Venice Bienniale; Performa, New York; the São Paolo Biennale; the Incheon Women Biennale and the Yokohama Triennale. In 2009 the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum honoured Joan Jonas with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her extraordinary contributions to the field of contemporary art.

She launched the BMW Tate Live Performance Room 2013 series with a new work created especially for an online audience on 28 February 2013. BMW Tate Live Performance Room is a pioneering strand of live, online performances simultaneously seen by international audiences across world time zones at .

Bauer is currently a Professor and Dean of the School of Fine Art at the Royal College of Art, London. For more than twenty-five years, she has worked as a curator of exhibitions and presentations on contemporary art, film, video, and sound, with a focus on transdisciplinary formats. Bauer was curator of The Future Archive, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.), Berlin, 2012; Artistic Director of the 3rd Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, Berlin, 2004; and Co-Curator of documenta 11Ìý2001–2.
