There is no way to make a drawing – there is only drawing. Drawing is a verb.
Richard Serra
How can we learn to look, and to see, through drawing? How can we, literally, draw out meaning, understanding and ideas from art?Â
This series of artist-led workshops invites you to explore drawing as a tool and process to actively engage with modern and contemporary art and artists’ practice.Taking place in the galleries at É«¿Ø´«Ã½, each workshop focuses on a specific collection display and introduces drawing activities designed to encourage a close examination of artworks across a range of different media, including painting, sculpture, installation, video, film and photography. Experimenting with different approaches, you have the opportunity to explore drawing in its broadest sense: as a tool for looking, thinking and learning about modern and contemporary art, as a method to draw out and interpret the artists’ works and ideas. Working with a variety of materials including pencil, masking tape, string, as well as paper itself, you are encouraged to move beyond the page to explore expanded definitions of drawing.Â
Using the gallery as a shared space for learning and creative enquiry, each workshop includes a number of collaborative activities and group discussions and time to develop your individual approaches to drawing, creating a community of practice based on shared critical discussion and collaboration.Â
No previous experience in drawing is required. These workshops are suitable for anyone.
and are both practising artists who for more than 10 years have worked extensively to interpret museum and contemporary art collections with diverse groups.
