This panel discussion draws from the latest issue of Manifesta Journal, which thinks through our contemporary global condition, through destabilising narratives of origin, rootedness, authenticity and identarian politics. Panelists will critically assess and reposition the legacy of concepts such as 'hybridity'  or 'hyphenated identitities' and their contemporary relevance in the field of arts and humanities.

Speakers include Kapwani Kiwanga with her investigation of Afrofuturism, theorist Fatima El Tayeb and curator Elvira Dyangasi Ose. Through presentations and a panel discussion, Future(s) of Cohabitation hopes to open up visions, possibilities and realities for dynamic, potential and imagined futures to coinhabit across space.

Fatima El-Tayeb

Fatima teaches at the University of California, San Diego. She is the author of European Others. Queering Ethnicity in Postnational Europe (University of Minnesota Press, 2011) as well as of numerous articles on the interactions of race, gender, sexuality, and nation. Before moving to the U.S., she lived in Germany and the Netherlands, where she was active in black feminist, migrant, and queer of color organizations.

Kapwani Kianga

Kapwani studied Anthropology and Comparative Religions at McGill University. She has been an artist-in-residence in Paris, Eindhoven and Dakar and has exhibited in many locations internationally including Paris, Glasgow, Almería and London. Her film and video works have been nominated for two BAFTAs and have received awards at international film festivals.

Bisi Silva

Bisi is an independent curator and the founder/director of Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos (CCA, Lagos) which opened in December 2007. She curated the Dakar Biennale in Senegal in 2006 and co-curated The Progress of Love, a transcontinental collaboration across three venues in Nigeria and America from Oct 2012 – Jan 2013. Since 2011 she has been the curatorial advisor for Tiwani Contemporary, London.

Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez

Nataša is an independent curator, living and working in Paris. She graduated in Comparative Literature and History of Art at the University of Ljubljana, and obtained her master’s degree in Theory of Art at the EHESS in Paris. In Paris Petrešin-Bachelez curated exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou, Jeu de Paume, Le Plateau/FRAC Ile-de-France, Paris Photo, and, between 2010 and 2012, was Codirector of Les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers. Since 2011, she has been appointed as the Chief Editor of Manifesta Journal.

Nora is Curator of Public Programme at Tate.

Virginie Bobin

Virginie is a Paris-based independent curator and writer. She has worked as Assistant Curator at Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam (2013-14); Projects and Publishing Coordinator at Les Laboratoires d'Aubervilliers (2010-13); Curatorial Assistant for Performa, the New York Biennial of Performing Arts (2009); as well as on several exhibition and publishing projects. She has been Associate Editor of Manifesta Journal for issues 13-17. She is currently preparing Composing Differences, a program of workshops, talks and events at MoMA PS1, MoMA Recording Studios and e-flux space in New York (April 21-27, 2014) and is the guest curator for the final exhibition of the Master of Artistic Research at the Royal Academy in The Hague.
