Cathy De Monchaux
Wandering about in the future, looking forward to the past (1994)
Tate
This collection display takes its title from Cathy de Mounchaux's Wandering About in the Future, Looking Forward to the Past. It is a display of some of the painting, photography, sculpture and video recently acquired for the Tate's collection.
The title of the display hints at some of the ideas and issues involved in the collecting of contemporary art. Acquired by Tate with an eye to the future, these complex artworks will come to stand for the present as it becomes the past.
The display features work by major international artists. It opens with abstraction: paintings and sculpture which manipulate colour, process and texture to engage the viewer's attention, transfixing us in spaces of reflection and contemplation.
