Christmas Tree 2010: Giorgio Sadotti: Flower Snake

9 December 2010 – 5 January 2011

Each year Tate Britain invites an artist to create a Christmas Tree for the gallery.

This year, Giorgio Sadotti has chosen a Norwegian Spruce but has resisted the tradition of decorating the tree. By presenting it ’undressed’, Sadotti asks us to contemplate the tree’s true beauty and invests it with potential.

A bullwhip is coiled at the bottom of the tree. At a performance on Twelfth Night, marking the end of the festive season, the spell of Christmas will be driven out.

Giorgio Sadotti lives and works in London. His art practice includes sculpture, sound, performance, collage and photography.

The performance took place on 5 January 2011 at 7 pm in the Rotunda, Tate Britain.
